Resale Value

I'm all for a free market, and there's really no point to be made here because they're selling, but the resale value on a decent electric skateboard is insane. I'm seeing asking prices at 75-80% and they appear to be selling.

And the thing is that a good chunk of the value is locked up in the battery. A used battery that buyers don't know anything about - how it was used, how often it was used, how it was maintained while not in use. And no warranty at all.

Spending $1200 for a used board vs. $1500 for the same thing new just seems insane to me.

Am I overestimating these risks? Or is there some way to mitigate those risks that I'm not aware of?

 

You can get extra info up on the remote which shows how many charge cycle the battery has had and also shows how healthy the battery cells are. I personally agree with you and would pay 20% extra for a brand new board but for some people £200 - £300 makes a big difference financially

 

Exactly how does it show how healthy the battery is? Does one of the screens show some kind of percentage?

 

The screen will show the exact voltage in each of the cells and how many times the battery has been charged. It's not an exact measure of health but it does give you an idea of usage and if there is a cell in the pack that could cause a problem.
