New R2 Remote problem

Interesting. So do they at least put you in eco mode at the same point no matter what the display shows? I guess I’ll have to ride with the battery page pulled up to monitor voltage. Dropping voltage too low under load is how you destroy batteries.

Really not an issue. The battery display goes yellow and you back off a bit. It goes yellow long before Eco mode engages, btw.

True but snee said he was hitting red display on r1 and r2 was showing 50%. Snee was that just resting voltage on the R2 remote or was that under load?

Not going below 3.5 - 3.6 volts per cell will really increase the life of your battery pack. Forget battery bar or % I’d rather just see the actual voltage.

Have you ever stopped to think that if the guys behind Evolve, who actually make the thing, and who ride them themselves didn’t think it important to have the battery percentage...? That’s good enough for me.

Battery load, battery life, blah, blah. Not exactly the chat of some laid back skate dudes is it?!! Just ride the thing and chill. If the battery runs out, plug it in at a coffee shop or get an Uber. Ride it ‘till it breaks, then buy another one.

Your welcome to shorten your battery life as you please. Yes that is what it’s about, riding. I choose to take care of my battery so I can continue to do so worry free.

that was under load, the r1 shows the true sag while riding and the r2 battery bar gives an average reading while riding.
keep in mind that i live in a hilly area so real time display showing sag is going to have massive dips while an averaged display over time will sit somewhere in the middle.

I read this thread before I received my r2 remote and it initially made me regret ordering it.. HOWEVER when I started using it I don't see why there's so much hate. Sure the numerical % is gone but the new skateboard battery bar still shows the sag.

For example the bar is 4/5 full while stationary, I start to use close to full throttle going up a short steep hill, the little skateboard bar drops to 1/2 full in a matter of seconds. When I come to a stop it goes back up to 4/5 full again. This is similar to the update speed of the old r1.

I feel the bar is a bit like the rpm needle on a car, it's now quicker to get the info at a quick glance rather than reading small numbers. Ok so you don't get to see a 5% difference but i think its enough accuracy to avoid over discharging the battery on hills and speed runs.

I've had my GTX for just over a month, and received it with the R1 remote. I just received my R2 about a week ago, and really like it overall. A couple of observations from a relative newcomer to eboards:
    1) I find the board way smoother, safer, and easier to control at low speeds with the R2
    2) I preferred the Battery % display, but I can live with it the way it is
    3) I find it much more difficult to see the mode I'm in on the display, compared to the R1. I'm sure those of you under 40 yrs of age have no idea what I'm talking about, but if you need reading glasses to read a book, this thing is now brutal. I've started wearing safety glasses with reading inserts at the bottom of the lens, which helps enormously. I just wish they wouldn't use a coloured background and blank font. In fact, I wish they called the modes 1, 2, 3 and 4, and displayed that number!
4). The battery definitely seems to be a problem. I had to walk/push home today after a (thankfully) short ride. I stayed at destination for around 2.5 hrs, and I'm quite sure I turned the remote and board off when I got there. When I set out to come home, I grabbed the remote from my pocket and it was actually hot, and was in fact off. Turned it on to find it almost totally drained. Managed to get about 200m out of it, then had to walk/push. From now on, I'll definitely be bringing my R1 along as backup. Who knows, maybe I really didn't turn it off, and drained the battery - more testing will tell.
    5) I find I have to re-pair the remote 95% of the time, and it often takes 30-40sec. The R1 never had this issue. I will follow some of the power-up sequences recommended in this thread and see if that helps. Definitely puzzling though, when the R1 NEVER had this issue.
All in all I like the R2 over the R1 though, so maybe a firmware update in the future?

BlatherMouth if you are certain you turned your remote off then you could have a battery problem like the OP of this thread. This is a known issue where there's a component inside that still draws power when it's off (when it shouldn't). Evolve will replace it under warranty.

Yes I definitely will have to test to verify. Until today I have not had battery problems, so it's entirely possible it was self-inflicted.
Also, since posting, I have turned the board and the (now fully recharged) remote on/off several times in the following sequence, its connection to the board was as it should be, no re-pairing required:
POWER ON: Turn board on, wait 10 seconds, then turn on R2 remote
POWER OFF: Turn board off FIRST, wait for remote to buzz indicating connection loss, then turn off remote
I did this 3 times in a row, and connection was automatically established every time.
Until today, I had always turned the remote off first. Doing this with the R1 remote never caused a problem, but it seems the R2 prefers the sequence above. Anyone else seeing the same?

I bought a Bamboo GT street last weekend and had a dud r2 controller. would go flat within 24 hours. Also had issues connecting and after about 4 rides the trigger started to lock up.

Luckily I live on the Gold Coast and emailed support@evolve and they said I could come in and get it fixed on the spot.

They replaced the circuit board and reset the trigger and also updated the firmware as apparently, they have new firmware which is in the words of the techy a much better product. I didn't have much experience with the original firmware but after a few rides I can confirm the remote is very solid. Syncs super fast. Turn board on then remote and syncs within a second. No issues so far except that the original trigger reset was flawed and I had to do that again.

Symptoms of needing a trigger reset for me were that the remote would not turn off while the board was on and could not change out of ECO. I thought that was due to the battery being low on board but it was still about 30%. After board recharge, the remote was still the same, locked in ECO mode. Trigger reset fixed this.

Now very happily riding everywhere and the remote is so smooth. My only complaint is that I was doing just over 30Km/h in GT mode and the brake is very touchy at high speed.

I guess they still haven't fixed the battery dead problem.

I just got my remote last month. It was dead on arrival. I charged it, worked fine. Next day. Dead.

It seems to have the same problem everyone is talking about. Even though you turn it off when it is fully charged, it's dead the next day. Like something is draining the battery even though it's turned off.

If you use it right after charging it, the battery lasts a really long time.

I just emailed evolve. I will update on how they are with the customer service.

Cool remote. Glad I have the R1 as a spare!

Well, I'd have to say evolve is working really hard to provide excellent customer service. I emailed them Tuesday about my remote problem and I received the replacement remote on Friday.

They sent me a return label to send the defective remote back.

So far the new remote looks like it works great. It turned on right out of the box and showed a full charge.

It's been awhile but, figured I'd update. The second R2 remote they sent me still had the battery drain problem. It just had a larger battery so it took longer to die. They sent me a third one and it's fixed.

The second one still had the old software. I could tell because it was finicky about connecting to the board. The third one has the larger battery and the software update. It connects to the board instantly and it lasts for about three cycles of the board battery before it needs to be charged.

Be careful everyone. These R2 remotes are not water resistant at all. If you ever get it wet, it will die. I think this is the source of other riders problems.

If you wanna make it more water resistant take it apart and coat it with conformal coating then corrosion X. Dont coat the LCD screen, or the bluetooth antenna.
