There's so much enthusiasm for DIY in the e-boarding community seeing as you could originally only build them from scratch, plus some of the other big brands literally only sell the parts and you put it together yourself, I'm sure there would be a market for it.

I imagine it would most likely invalidate your warranty swapping out the deck, battery and enclouse that you've nearly got a new board by then anyway :p So the type of person to do it probably would willing to take the risk and tinker.

I doubt it would be stepping on anyones toes, I get the impression Evolve are busy enough producing and distributing their core product. It would be more like a super enthusiasts 3rd party mod. Turns your existing Evolve board into a monster, yet at core it's still Evolve, so hey, win, win!

You are right you would still have to buy an Evolve board to make it work so they wouldn't lose any market share or any $$$.

It is one thing Evolve supporting and promoting people "customising" their boards (eg putting on coloured grip tape!)
compared to actually customising and making their boards better than they make them which they wouldn't be supportive of.

In general I guess most companies are not against custom upgrades to their products. Look at the car industry.
Possibly though once people start improving the boards with parts and upgrades, then they might think about improving other parts and then end up as a competitor with their own complete board and dont even use Evolve boards as the base, which then they become a problem for Evolve. This is where I think even starting off this process would be considered stepping on their toes.

And seriously though most people are not going to buy a $1500 board and then discard the new deck and new battery and pay for a new bigger deck and battery. Maybe only the crazy ones.

But hell is it worth it. I cant get enough of the extra capabilities and the feel of the longer deck, no concave and the comfortable bounce over cracks etc. Its great flogging it into strong winds and up hills for long distances and not even looking at the battery % until I get home

I am used to buying a motorcycle & then spending double or more in customizing it to my needs. I'd be very interested to do what you did to my Bamboo GT, especially when the battery starts to wear...

I don't know, it's a big jump going from making a few custom high performance upgrade parts for a product to improve it, to deciding to just say screw it and source everything to make, market, sell, distribute, service a whole new product that would be the sum of all these mods and then some.

There's definitely people out there in hobbies like that that love to lay down extra money to mod and enhance their product to the limits, especially if the improvement is measurable in terms of say doubling the battery size, as opposed to a minor 10% improvement from some other kind of upgrade. Although on one hand I guess you are also delving into the DIY part of the industry with a project like yours.

Years ago I was big into paintball and there's dozens of gun manufacturers, and scores of companies that would then create and sell some great high end upgrades for them, whether it's the entirety of the internals so you're just left with the shell of the original paintball marker, or even just the electronic circuitry that goes in the grip. The OEMs were still getting sales and their product was out on display performing to the public, helping teams win because they were so juiced up.

I remember there was one company, Tadao who end up selling the circuits boards that go in the grips, it was the electronics controlled the mechanical actuation of the gun and also often included upgraded switches that affected the feel of the trigger pull, allowing you to hit higher rates in semi-auto. It gave you better speed modes beyond semi, easier to switch modes and a ton of other upgrade features.

They ended up making boards for nearly every paint gun manufacturer and everyone was using them at the time. They never ended up making their own gun, but did a great job specialising in the part of the gun they could really improve. I guess it might be akin to making a sweet BMS or universal controller that could be used on a board.

Sadly they stopped making the boards back in 2015. Why? Because they helped move the industry forward and forced the OEMs to up their game. At the time they ceased trading nearly all guns came with vastly improved electronics, partly pushed forward quicker by Tadao's great work.

If you think you can make a worthwhile upgrade package that transforms these boards that's worth it for you and those who want to buy it, then I say go for it. It can only help push Evolve and the other brands harder, raising the standard for everyone at a faster rate. Got to love competition and innovation.

just wanted to share a few things i've done to my board so far.

    1. add LED light strips under the board. the battery and control module case are stuck to the bottom using heavy duty velcro although i plan to mount a small box under the two front truck mounting nuts. IMG_9670.jpg IMG_9671.jpg IMG_9674.jpg
    2. as soon as i got my board i scratched my motor by standing my board upright. i installed a "bumper" by wrapping 3M temflex rubber splicing tape around my motor brackets. simply wrap tight and it holds nicely. IMG_9672.jpg IMG_9673.jpg
    3. here is a foam seal underneath my cover plate that i installed to keep sand from entering the compartment. this also protects from "traces" of water due to the type of foam i used. IMG_9676.jpg
    4. covered my entire board with grip tape due to the extreme riding conditions i will be riding in. IMG_9657.JPG
    5. balanced all four wheels. the rear two are the most important. no vibrations and no more shaking and incredibly smooth now. i balanced these wheels like you would with car wheels. below you will see two square 7gram weights painted black and stuck in with silicone adhesive. IMG_9680.JPG
    6. made a simple handle that anyone can easily make. simple just find a thick strap and stitch it to make a loop. works really well and i can just put it in my back pocket. great if you don't want to drill a bulky handle on the side of your board IMG_9692.JPG IMG_9693.JPG
    7. hope this helps ! enjoy the ride!!

Good idea on the temflex rubber bumber.

That's a solid array of upgrades!

Sounds like something is stuck in the motor or belts/pulleys...

Good to see someone else is doing what I did with the custom grip from whateverskateboards! Something I forgot to mention. If you live outside the U.S. the shipping will cost more than the grip tape.

I need extra grip on my Carbon GT but I still want to keep the design. Would clear grip be fine?

Should be VikasG, I believe a fair few people have used extra clear grip. Some using printed vinyl to do a whole new design, then adding clear grip on top.

Bear in mind clear grip is actually partially opaque. It obscures the design below but I can still see the wood grain through it.

3000 lumens and uses 4x18650 batteries!

That's crazy, very keen to see how two of them perform in the dark now.
