Carbon GT - full charge then downhill

Just a question about how the BMS handles the extra power generated by a downhill run when the battery is fully charged. I live and work at the TOP of a decent hill...I estimate 25 degrees or more.

I am 5'11 and 200 lbs so I can create a fair bit of kinetic energy so combine this will heading out from the office and straight into a downhill run...using regen brakes I am concerned that I could either heat up the electronics too much and or overcharge the battery and do some damage. I am charging the battery during the day so its going to be at 100%.

Does anyone know what safe guards are in place for this scenario ?

    Cheers

  2. My understanding is that you're not supposed to use the regenerative braking while at 100%. I don't even think the board will allow you to do this, and would shut off. I haven't tested this out (because the manual says not to) but maybe others have. If you can't find another solution you might need to flip the board over and let it run in GT mode for a bit to drain the battery some before taking it down? Just make sure you drain it enough that it doesn't hit 100% again before the bottom of the hill.

I haven't tried it either. I was coming down a steep hill in Byron Bay and kept looking at the remote ..it said 95% after a relatively short period so immediately took a detour around a car park to burn off some battery before going back down the hill.

  4. Depending on how long the hill is, you could get the board to like 80% and then, starting at the top, use the regen brakes all the way down to see how much battery you recover. That should give you a decent idea of where to start off at the beginning. I haven't experienced a cut off downhill yet, but I don't want to.

Living at the top of a hill seems like the perfect double-edged sword of electric board ownership. You get to start your ride with a lot of fun....but you'll have to watch out for that gravity thing I keep hearing so much about

I've tried it with 100% and it didn't cut out BUT my BMS chip was bad. I'll test it out when I get my bored back from evolve tomorrow.

I have the same situation that Cranny has, i currently live on the top of a hill (about 30-35 degrees) so when i go to work i need to go down right away over 300-400 meters. I usually go down with a 100% of the battery and never got a cut out. I also checked how much it will charge the battery and its actually really, really small amount, i would say less than 1% in that conditions (my weight is 75kg). So i would say you dont have to worry if the distance do not exceed 500m (or even more if a downgrade is lower than 20-25 degrees).

I just did a 3km ride going downhill from 100% battery with no problems or cutouts. Started by doing 200m uphill fully charged and then experiencing 100% the most of the time (as it regenerates power) with no issue but with a great amount of alert/fear.
