GT motor bearing noise? [Solved!]

    Hello all,

Below is a link to a video depicting a worrisome noise coming from one of the motors on my newly-received Bamboo GT. I've read elsewhere that worn motor bearings can be the culprit in such a case, but I wanted to solicit feedback on other possible causes. I don't believe the belt is too tight, and I've only ridden it a handful of times since getting it.

Thanks for any thoughts on this, Greg.

Take the belt off and the drive gear, turn the motor by hand and see if you can feel for the noise if that makes sense. Try turning the motor by hand and figure out if it makes the noise is at the same point in each rotation. is there anything stuck in the motor pulley gear?

Are the pulleys hitting each other?

Thanks for your reply Milly. I've attached another video with the drive gear off, using the belt only to rotate the motor gear. It does indeed make the noise at the same point in the rotation. I don't see anything in the motor gear. Interesting to note that it only makes the noise when there's some amount of tension on the motor gear; if I rotate the gear by hand, it's quiet (but a bit loose).

I received a swift reply from Evolve support. The issue was a loose motor gear set screw (allen screw). I removed the screw, applied loctite, and replaced the screw, making sure to tighten it down firmly. Once that was done, the noise was gone!

I hope this is helpful to anyone else who might come across this issue.

    Ahhh bloody awesome!

Can you post a pic of the screw that needed tightening?

I've got everything put back together at the moment, but next time I'm swapping out wheels I'll take a snap and post it here for reference sake.

Here's a photo of the set screw location. Just to the right of the belt on the motor gear, you can see the threaded hole into which the screw goes. It takes a very small allen head driver.

How loose was it? Like a few turns or?

I can't say exactly, since I first removed it with the intention of applying loctite before tightening it back down. Didn't seem like three turns though. Maybe two.
