So I purchased some Evolve F1 Street 107mm wheels with the 38GT drive gear yesterday and gave it a quick spin. Loved the speed but wasn't able to get as good of a carve over my regular evolve street wheels.

Took it out for another spin today and after about 10 minutes of riding. I was going pretty much full speed when the wheels locked up immediately throwing me forwarding. Got some pretty gnarly road rash but was on a smooth road with no visible rocks on anything that could have stopped the board like that.

I'm not sure if there is something I could have done wrong with installation or if this is at all common with the larger wheels.

I was pretty scared to ride back but didn't feel anything rubbing or stopping until I got home. I hope I can get any insight from you guys as this definitely puts a damper on my ride knowing that it could happen again.

Vangeloff – Are you saying the motors locked up or something else? Also what remote are you using? The wheels should always spin freely except the tightness of the belts can make the back wheels roll with resistance, the tighter the belt the more resistance. Hopefully you have taken the wheels off and rechecked everything. Depending on how hard I ride and the type of surface I am riding at this point I end up swapping out my bearings every month or so. The fine dust from dirt has them rolling pretty gritty at times. Either way the wheels shouldn’t lock up so that is why I ask the two questions.

Yeah it felt like the motors just locked up the board stopped immediately throwing my forward and I was going full speed at that point. The road I was riding on is newly paved with no rocks or debris to have caused it to happen so still stumped. Once I got back on to get back home i didn't feel any resistance whatsoever.

I just installed the 107mm wheels the day before so it was only my 4th-5th mile riding and cleaned everything thoroughly before installing the new wheels. They also had new bearings and brand new 38t drive gear.

I haven't gotten back on the board since then as I got pretty scraped up and had pulled my groin pretty good on the fall.

Definitely going to take off and reinstall the back wheels to make sure nothing looks out of the ordinary but kinda freaked to get ride again cause the fall could have been a lot more brutal.

Anyway it could have been something faulty in 1 of the 2 motors?

Wow. I am sorry to hear about that and hope you heal quickly. What about the remote is it the R1 or R2? I ask because there have been reported cases linked to the remote (R1) loosing connection to the board controller. When this happens and the person shifts down not thinking anything is happening it is actually storing those commands in queue. Once the remote and board re-establish connection those commands are received by the board and it shift you all the way into reverse. You go from forward to being thrown. The R2 doesn’t do this and goes to safe mode after re-establishing. Short of that I can’t think why the motor would lock up. With the conditions you have described it doesn’t sound like anything could have gotten caught up in the belt or belt guard. Maybe someone else has a thought on this but I completely understand your trepidation about getting back on the board until you get to the bottom of the issue.

Yes, I meant to reply to that. I have the R1 remote. If this does lose connection, would it have to have lost connection while I was braking?

It seems since I installed the larger wheels, it brakes a lot more smooth then with my original street wheels. I also recall hearing some clicks when it locked up and I fell off. Hard to tell since It came outta nowhere and the first thing that went through my head (not literally) was softening up the landing. Thanks again for the reply.

Vangeloff – it could lose the connection really at any time and any change to the speed setting while disconnected would be felt when the board and remote reconnect. I don’t think it will brake if you have the trigger braking while disconnected, release the trigger and the remote then reconnects. The few times I did lose connection with the R1 I immediately made sure I didn’t touch the remote until I saw it was reconnected. The trigger guard helps too. I know this stuff isn’t cheap but if you can get the R2 remote which I think is still around $79 I would highly recommend it. Having experienced drop outs with the R1 and the touchy nature of the R1 trigger I was always on edge after my spill. If the R2 remote isn’t an option you can still send the R1 in for a firmware update. The newer firmware I believe has an option to disable the reverse gear and has the wheel settings for the larger wheel. I never used reverse anyway so no big loose for me. If you email evolve support they will provide instructions for sending the remote in. If you are healing and won’t be on the board for a while something to think about. I have used the R2 about a dozen times now and really think it is a better, safer remote. There are a number of forum posts about R1 and R2 issues which might be worth reading but sometimes people get either a little too off topic or a little too deep for me so you have to weed through some of the posts to get to the good stuff. Hope this helps and enjoy skating motor or no motor ;-).
