Custom motor guard for Evolve GT skateboard

Found this pretty interesting idea for a motor guard from Benjamin on Facebook.

Such a simple idea. Probably needs a bit of tweaking to optimise, but great for keeping water and debris away from the motors.

Some strategically placed holes or vents at certain angles could help with air flow, while still keeping moisture out.

If the contact points are are the right places it could even help with heat dissipation, aiding in the cooling of the motors.

Maybe even add a few fins or a spoiler that would act as a heat sink.

Edit: I just realised the contact points are of course on the frame surrounding the motor, not sure what the heat buildup is like there vs the main body of the motor. Still, there might be a way to make it work.

I actually feel the cover above will be more of a scoop for debris, dust, dirt and pebbles. Look at how well the belt covers do at that job. And think, then all that stuff that's trapped whirling around inside that guard gets immediately inhaled by the motors. Not sure if the motor bearings are sealed or not, if they are not they're going to get toasted quick. Even sealed ones like in the skate wheels can only take so much dirty abuse and they die quickly.

I actually liked Kev's design, it allows the motors to breath normally and doesn't scoop anything. We should get a group buy and design our own, placing rubber bumpers on the end so we can stand the board up on the guard. The GT is a pain at times trying to find a place to lay it down and would be better if it was able to stand on its tail.

That is quite an interesting one by KpH

Doesn't seem to protect from moisture or falling rain though?

The rubber bumpers so you can stand it upright could be neat. You don't want too much extra material protruding from the existing motor position though, otherwise it starts to catch with you lift the front of the board and roll it behind you when walking.

The motors on the pre-GTs are a bit big and you've got to watch the angle you lift it at so it doesn't scrape the ground as you walk.

Good points Alex. My motor protector certainly doesn't help you with falling rain :) It's much more about making the rear end more sturdy and robust to impacts, clumsy feet and a wayward throttle finger. I have also just tested the dragging observation - you are correct, the extra material does hit the deck when you lift the front up enough.

Some good ideas in this thread, I will probably try something similar when I get back from holidaying.

  8. Don't own the street setup yet, however looking at the bumpers/ guards as when I get them.

Looking from the pictures above, even with or without bumpers, by the time you lift the board approx 45 degrees or so, it looks as though the motor will definitely hit the ground! Anyone can confirm? and that being said...
how does anyone drag their boards along the ground when say you are in shopping centres? I can do that with my AT (+ sling is on the way)

If I am going to drag mine, I grab my rear bull bars and roll on the front wheels.
