97mm evolve wheels installation concerns/ questions...

  1. Hi Evolve boarders,

Just got my 97mm evolve wheels yesterday and was totally excited...
started researching a few youtube videos and looking for the instructions however was hardly any...
My concern is that the pulley comes within 1mm of the wheels! if I were to take this out for testing, I am concerned the pulley will eventually rub against the wheels and hence fray the belt and cause some accident with me on it.

    All I found was this:
    (80mm to 97mm upgrade)
    (Evolve AT to street)

I am concerned with the back wheels as that's where the power is... (Official site suggests:)
    - add the silver gear bearing to driver gea (no speed rings added)
    1. On the base platform where motor is, put in 1x large speed ring at base of axle
    2. Insert drive gear into axle
    3. Put in small (black) speed ring into axel
    4. Fit the belt over
    5. Insert the 97mm wheel
    6. Put small speed ring into Axel + bolt on top.

Sound simple, however al the accessories came with extra (maybe), large and small speed rings.
Q1. Am I supposed to use 2x large speed rings at base of axle or should it go somewhere else or not needed?
Q2. Am I supposed to use extra black speed rings in step #3?
Q3. I did try with 2x extra rings, however the nut just covers the bolt (no extra windings can be seen)- See attached. Is this safe?
Q4. Where should the belt sit on the gears? It keeps riding closer to the wheels letting me think its going to start hitting the gears or worst yet the wheels.

    Front wheels:
Q a) Are you suppose to put extra black speed rings before or after the wheel gets attached? or is 1x each sufficient.
What is the correct and right process?

    help needed!

Confirm with local skate shop and looking on the evolve video site,

    1x large washer
    1x small washer
    Drive gear
    1x small washer
    Bolt....

Damn thing now scrapes the belt on wheels under real world testing....

Hopefully that nylon locking axle nut is now seated properly As you mentioned, its not correct in your last pic above and I would never ride on something like that. You need a couple of threads to show at least for that nylon lock nut to function correctly or else it can come loose while riding which is dangerous. Also evolve does not use any guides on their motor pulleys which is not the right way of running a pulley/belt system.

The reason your belt is hitting the wheel is that the pulley is a bad design and they need that inner belt guide to be larger/wider or some how space the pulley so it sits the guide so the belt does not contact the wheel.

    Good luck.

I'm having the same problem. Just got my wheels.
Just installing normal like suggested, and I'm also finding the belt runs away from the motor, with very little clearance.

Called up Evolve, they said they are getting 'rubber' o rings as some setup doesn't have the right clearance.
They will be sending me some.

I've tried 1-3x o-rings between drive gear + wheel with little success. Put in 3x o-rings/ washers - and I can barely put the nut over the top! (ie. would like to see visible nylon thread)

IMG_4462.JPG I’m using the AT belt cover for now, just to ensure the belt does not run of the motor gear.
Going for a moonlight ride tonight. Will see how it goes.

I hope someone can offer me a solution to this problem.
I have tried various washer combinations, but I also don't want the wheel to be too far away from the drive gear.

Let me know if anyone else has this squeaking wheel problem.

  8. Same issue for me, anyone any ideas? Does not sound healthy

Will be switching back to ABEC11 97mm

The squeaking is coming from the kevlar belt rubbing against your wheel. If you look at the wheel you will have a spiral pattern on the inside. I had the same issue. After speaking to evolve they provided some o-rings to go around the motor pulley which helps space it out away from the wheel.

    Thanks for the info!
Can you give me a little more info. Is it the larger silver O-ring?
Does it go on before the gear?

    Thanks you.

I went back to my 83mm stock wheels today.
Looks like Evolve sold me a lemon. Tried various washer setups, but did not feel comfortable with the nut so far above the thread.
I used to get so upset when I saw people complain about Evolve issues. Thought they were a bunch of whiners. Now I’m one of them.
    Shame on you Evolve!
If you have a Bamboo GT, with the 32t gear, the 97mm Evolve might not fit. So cautions to anyone considering it.

How does the ABEC compare to the Evolve wheel Matthew? Looks like I might be switching soon.

Mine doesn't appear to be squeaking on the wheel where, my belt rubs on the motor cover only on the left side...

  14. I have the spiral pattern so looks like this is the issue, poor design considering its an evolve product. Going to email Evolve for the o rings.

I have put my ABEC11 back on, feel similar to me, maybe a bit softer, mine are the red 74a Metroboard edition.

    I am trying something different.
I am installing the wheel in reverse.
    Check the photo’s.
I will go for a ride tomorrow to see if it works.

I just figured out why this is happening. (Even on my GTX) I pulled the belt off and re assembled without it. Installed the washer, gear, speed ring, wheel, speed ring, and nut. With everything tight you can actually slide the gear out from the center of the trucks further into the wheel. Now I understand why evolve is sending out o-rings to help keep the gear in place. I'll try o-rings tomorrow. Evolve should make some proper wheel spacers to fit several different wheels. If I had a 3D printer I'd try to make some myself.

    Original problem sovled:

I had emailed Evolve re: this, their response:
    - rubber o-ring for the drive gear (shown on picture). They are able to send this to you if/ where required.

    It works.
    (At least for me).
    - Installed the rubber o-ring on the drive gear.
    - added 2 silver washers before the wheel came on

Now I have at least 1-2mm of clearance between the belt and wheel.
Been working for about 3-4 weeks.

The bolt at the end, is the same, no visible threads, just have to monitor this in case, it does unwind itself as there is not much of the nylon to grip on to.

Has anyone tried the abec drive gear on the evolve 97s, would that fix the clearance issues? My abec gears (I use them with abec 97s) fit my evolve 83s so I don't see why they wouldn't fit the evolve 97s. Just a thought.

Swimmingintoast I contacted Evolve USA and they didn't know what I was talking about when I asked for O-Rings. That would fix my problem for sure as I have used my wife's hair ties for a temporary fix. Evolve USA wanted me to mail my board in for service. I don't want to do that when I can go buy an O-Ring and fix it. I just thought it would be nice to get the correct one from Evolve instead of having to search for the proper size. I sent an email to Evolve Australia. Hopefully hear back soon.

Xrayturner I have not tried the Abec gears as I don't own them.

Installing the rear wheels in reverse solved all all my issues along with adding an extra speed ring between drive gear and wheel.
